Description
Finally on the marathon (no I didn’t forget) I was originally going to be doing Timesplitters 2. However, time constraints got in the way so I settled for what would have been game #9 on the list.
Super Mario Bros 3.
Now I know a lot of people consider Super Mario World to be the best 2D Mario title but I have to disagree. Considering World is working off of what 3 built. Mario 3 IS the best 2D Mario game, though I won’t pull a MovieBob and write a self congratulatory book about it’s excellence while jerking myself off. I am not completely blinded by nostalgia to say it’s 100% flawless, because the game at times is a bit on the easy side.
Not easy as say Scarlet Johansson “auditioning” for a movie role, but in the sense of the level length and boss variety. Now granted that’s all due to modern titles spoil me rotten with longer levels and different boss fights, so by 1991 standards it’s fine.
It was also the game to introduce the concept of multiple power ups with animal themes. Though I am surprised the Frog suit hasn’t gone to be a mainstay like the Tanooki suit or the Raccoon Mario. Having more than just the fire flower is a must with me, which is more than what World had.
It’s also the Mario game to set the ground work for how most Mario games operate and function, right down to level select, world structure and enemy variety.
This brings us to the Koopa Kids.
A problem I have with say Sonic the Hedgehog, is when they create characters to fill a role a character is already filling. So why have Shadow and Silver when you have Metal Sonic, but more to the point why have Bowser Jr when you have the Koopa Kids?
I’ll remember these little bastards for their appearance in the 2nd season of the Mario cartoon. Mainly the goofy personalities and new names they got. They also changed it up with boss strategies unlike say Boom Boom Turtle, who is about as one note and predictable as a Buzzfeed article.
The main challenge of Mario 3 is in the final world, which takes off the kid gloves and comes for your ass. The only real flaw in that statement is the final boss itself, where I kid you not Koopa practically defeats himself.
It’s so ridiculous that even the Arkham Asylum Titan bosses aren’t that stupid.
In closing, Mario 3 is always a treat to revisit. The powerups, the locations and the soundtrack.
If you haven’t already, play it!
