522 - Barrel Rolled into a Brick Wall

Description

Next is everyone’s childhood heroes Nintendo. This was the only conference I managed to watch live. When gathering my thoughts and doing a quick browse online, I couldn’t help but notice a rather negative reception they’ve gotten over this.

Could they have farted out a conference worse than Cammie Dunaway from 2006?

To save some time on these little text marathons this year, I'm going to be stripping away the fat and get these down to their bare bones. So the following won't be talked about.

1 - Useless tech specs/sales figures/non game related news. However I will make an exception in places.

2 - Cinematic teaser trailers are excluded from the summary. For they tell me next to nothing about the final product.

3 - Ignoring all of the "here's a person in a suit" moments. Since they tell me fuck all about games.

Again, this will all be opinion based.

I will say that Nintendo's conferences are easier to watch and don't irritate me as much. Mainly because they try to keep them fun, amusing, under an hour long and aren't filled with "Please welcome a person in an ugly suit to the stage" type moments. The Muppets styled opening was amusing and led to the one (and sadly only) highlight for me....

1 - Star Fox Zero.
WHAT FUCKING TOOK YOU SO LONG!!?? *clears throat* Umm, yes sorry about that. I think it’s safe to say the days of Adventures/Assault and its ground combat are over. Being able to transform into a walker does harcon back to an idea from the cancelled StarFox 2 and having the Landmaster fly looks fun. I do hope it's not just StarFox64 again but rather tries out a new take with StarFox. I'm not completely sold on the 2 screen gameplay but maybe it won't feel so alien when I try it out first hand. So it’s a basic reboot to the franchise, so I guess people will be happy that Krystal is no longer cannon. From here, The conference Barrel Rolled into a brick wall.

2 - Donkey Kong and Bowser show up in Skylanders: Super Chargers.
Really sad the only major collab Nintendo are doing is with Activision, and its Skylanders tripe. I really don't understand this Amiibo or Skylanders craze and I have been advised by my friends to avoid them like the plague.

3 - Triforce Heroes.
Really not interested.

4 - Hyrule Warriors 3DS.
If my Wii U plans don't work out. I'll pick this up.

5 - Metroid Prime: Federation Force.
.... Wow. If you look at the like/dislike bar on YT for this video.... Jesus.

6 - Xenoblade Chronicles.
Haven't really got anything to comment with on this.

7 - Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer and Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival.
Meh, I'm not interested tbh.

8 - Yoshi's Epic Yarn.
This is intended for little kids, so anything negative I say about it will come off as mean spirited. So I'll say this; It looks cute.

9 - Yo-Kai Watch.
So Pokemon with Ghosts? Pass!

10 - Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
Probably the most unique of the Mario garbage they've come out with in recent years. I would like to know more about this one. It is a shame this game is given a tiny video package and Mario Maker gets this big explanation for it. Yeah there is a Tennis Game but I can't say I give a shit, this RPG idea could have been elaborated on more but alas, another time as it were.

11 - Super Mario Maker.
Not sure why a basic feature in a game is getting a stand alone title. It's like making a game based on a create a wrestler mode in old WWE titles.

Conclusion. This was more a whimper than a bang. Just basic information and what I'd call "safe" announcements. Games that won't wow you or you'll be playing 10 years from now, but rather stuff you'll just buy out of brand loyalty. I think that Metroid announcement really left a bad taste in everyone’s mouths.

This was a press conference where Nintendo needed to WOW people and want you to buy a Wii U. I think they blew their load with the Smash Direct and now they're sleeping in the wet patch, face down, trying not to look depressed. As I was editing this summary up, I discovered Iwata directly apologised for the showcase, mainly the awful looking Metroid game.
